A super fun musical study break game that is perfect for wrapping up a long day in the classroom!
Game Type: Study Break
Recommended Ages: 6 and up
Number Of Players: Whole class
Equipment Required: A drum or tambourine but you can clap the beat if you prefer
Where To Play: Indoors or outdoors
Duration: 5-10 minutes
Objective
The objective of Pass The Beat is to keep the rhythm of the song going without missing a beat.
How To Play
Step One: Students form a circle. Pass The Beat works best if the teacher stands in the middle of the circle.
Step Two: Pass The Beat is played with the phrase, ‘pass the beat around the room’. Explain that you will be passing the beat around the room either clockwise or anti-clockwise.
Step Three: Choose one student to start. Each time you tap the drum, the next student must say the next word in the phrase. For example, on the first beat the first student says ‘pass’. On the second beat, the next student says ‘the’ and so on around the circle.
Step Four: If a student misses the beat they must sit down. The final student standing is the champion however I rarely find that the game ends.
Teaching Note
As your students grow more confident, increase or vary the speed of the beat to make the game more challenging.

Thank you to Kynan Robinson for teaching me this fantastic game when my teaching was at best rudimentary!
Hello! I just stumbled across this post and noticed the credit you gave me for teaching you this game. You probably published this years ago. Regardless the shout-out is much appreciated. I’m really glad to see you’re still teaching and sharing out your stories and ideas. Kynan
